Number of Performers: I will use my body as the piece of art, but I will ask the class to participate.
What to Wear: I will wear all black.
Props to Use: Cinema Light Box, Light Box Letters, Yarn to hang the light box around my neck, and an extension cord.
Conceptual Description:
For many of us we are constantly searching for the meaning of life. We stress and sometimes struggle to figure out our own answer. My performance is intended to have the viewer not worry when given the question what life is about, and hopefully take some joy in the moment. I also decided to use a light box because it seems we are constantly using wall signs with life quotes. Like a wall sign will answer everyone’s questions about what life is about.
The performance will take place in the art gallery of the first floor of art building. It is a small intimate space. I will stand in the center with the light box hanging around my neck. I will wear black so that the light box remains the focal point. The lights in the gallery will be dim so the light box has its full effect. The audience will be seated in front of me. Each classmate will be asked to walk up to me, pick letters from the box and complete the sentence on the light box, “Life is about ______.” This isn’t meant to be deep thought. They will be asked to complete the sentence with one word that quickly comes to their head.
Step by Step Instructions:
- Attach yarn to light box so that the main person can hang the box around their neck.
- Spell out “Life is about” and leave space for audience to insert their answer.
- Plug in light box, and have main person stand with glowing light box around their neck.
- Set up chairs for the audience to sit it.
- Audience is then seated in front of the person with light box.
- The person standing, facing the audience, and wearing the light box will ask each audience member to walk up to the light box and complete the sentence. They will instruct the audience to pick the first word that comes to their head without using much thought. Once they know their word, they grab the letters provided and place on the light box.
- Give a moment for everyone to read that person’s answer, and then move to the next audience member.
- Once everyone is done, the person wearing the light box will insert the word “moments”.
